FCPS Attendance Policies
FCPS expects students to be in school and follow their assigned schedules unless their absences is excused due to illness, a death in the family, a medical appointment, or religious obligations.
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) requires that all children between the ages of five and eighteen be enrolled in school and attend on a daily basis. Any student who fails to report to school for a total of five scheduled school days (unexcused) for the school year may be referred to a school attendance officer for further action. When a referral is received, the school attendance officer will attempt to interview the student, parent, and other relevant parties to develop a plan to resolve the attendance issue. A student who is absent from school for 15 consecutive days or more is withdrawn from school and must officially register again upon his or her return to school.
Mountain View High School Policy
1. Students are expected to attend each class period every day. For adult students, there are no “excused absences” at Mountain View High School. Missed class time means missed instruction and may extend the time necessary to complete a course.
2. Students are responsible for communicating with teachers when they miss class and making up school work. Course completion requires both the mastery of course content and the appropriate amount of instructional time spent in class.
3. Per VDOE, students with five unexcused absences will be referred to an attendance officer and the Attendance Intervention Team.
4. By the time a student misses more than 7 periods of class, the teacher will have instituted one or more of the following procedures:
a. Student contact and home contact, attendance Intervention Team notification, and
develop an attendance contract with the student.
b. Participate in a parent-teacher-student conference.
c. Initiate and document use of interventions by the teacher.
d. Drop the student from the class.
e. Re-entry plan
5. If a student is dropped from a class by their teacher, with administrator approval, the teacher must develop a re-entry plan for re-enrollment with the student, counselor, and administrator. To support student accountability and growth, we are committed to ensuring students are provided re-entry opportunities and/or new beginnings.
6. It is important to arrive in class and prepared to learn.
a. Students arriving up to 30 minutes late to a class are considered tardy.
b. Students arriving more than 30 minutes late will be marked absent.
c. Three unexcused tardies are equivalent to one unexcused absence.
d. Students who leave the class for extended periods of times may be marked as a cut by the
teacher.
