Students enrolled in an English 11, AP English Language and Composition, or IB English Language & Literature course are required to earn verified credit in Reading and/or Writing to graduate with a standard or advanced studies diploma. A brief overview of the WorkKeys® assessment options is provided below. Assessments are administered in-person at school, under secure testing conditions. Format and timing may vary for students with IEP, 504 Plan, and/or English learner (EL) plan, in accordance with documented test accommodations.  WorkKeys® assessments are generally offered monthly throughout the academic year.  Participation eligibility depends on grade level for each WorkKeys® test window.

WorkKeys® Business Writing 

  • The WorkKeys® Business Writing test measures the skills individuals use when writing an original response to a work-related situation. Components of the Business Writing skill include sentence structure, mechanics, grammar, word usage, tone and word choice, organization and focus, and development of ideas.
  • In all cases, examinees read a written prompt and then write their response.
  • Number of Items: 1 prompt
  • Standard Test Length: 30 minutes (Extended Time is 45 minutes)
  • Possible Score Range: 1-5        
  • A score of 3 or higher is required to substitute for the EOC English Writing test (for standard or advanced studies diploma)

WorkKeys® Workplace Documents 

  • The WorkKeys® Workplace Documents assessment measures skills that individuals use when they read real workplace documents and use that information to make job-related decisions and solve problems. The documents include messages, emails, letters, directions, signs, bulletins, websites, contracts, and regulations.
  • Number of Items: 35 questions
  • Standard Test Length: 55 minutes (Extended Time +50% is 83 min)
  • Possible Score Range: < 3 - 7
  • A score of 4 or higher is required to substitute for the EOC English Reading test (for standard or advanced studies diploma). A score of 3 or higher is required for the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC).
  • Use of WorkKeys® Workplace Documents assessment does not remove the federal participation requirement for students enrolled in English 11 to take the SOL Reading test.
